LQJR Song is a song in French composed by Ludovic Lachance aka Betaplux that went viral in Québec in 2002. The song tells about events that occured during a LAN Party of the Ligue québécoise de jeux en réseau (LQJR). The song was contemporary to the Star Wars Kid that also originated in Québec, in Trois-Rivières.

Origin

Ludovic Lachance already composed songs when he was a teenager in secondary school (more or less equivalent to high school) in Québec and he was a drummer since he was 12 years old. As he was the only student with a Compact Disk burner, people would come to him to have songs burned. Ludovic would then make a point to always compose a song decidated to the person that he burned the CD for.

Later, he attended his first Counter-Strike tournament of the Ligue québécoise de jeux en réseau (LQJR). The event was called PureLan 3 and was held at the CÉGEP Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil on 9 and 10 November 2002. Ludovic was then young and inexperienced and didn't know what to expect from a LAN party aside that he needed his computer and to not sleep. He thought that a LAN party was a literal party in a conventional sense, so he brought a disco ball for 50-60 $ (CAD) and put it atop his computer. The other players would give him weird glances. He ended 2nd or 3rd.

Ludovic liked his experience so he wrote a song to commemorate the tournament. It was written in a .txt file in which he first noted the main topics he wanted to address, and then he covered the song Eurodancer from DJ Magoo. He recorded the song in Windows Recorder with a 6 $ microphone, and the music was not directly added to the song as an audio track but physically recorded by the microphone as it was played on speakers. Since Windows Recorder was limited to 1:30 records, the song was assembled with several audio files, which si why it gets cut at some point.

The song narrates the events of the tournament with the usernames of the other players. Ludovic didn't keep contact with most of them, excepted for Lobik that became his friend, but eventually he also lost contact with him when he went to study in the Hautes études commerciales (HEC) of Montréal^[1].

Aftermath

The song went instantly viral. One of Ludovic's cousins put it on Napster, and it could also be found on mIRC. He was surprised to hear the song in a party. At some point, he was offered to perform the song live but he always refused.

Ludovic composed other songs later like Orgun song (about a player called Orgun that was 26 years old in the middle of 16 years old guys) or WSOP Song (about the World Series of Poker), but they never got the same notoriety. Some of the other songs he made were lost because they were on a hard drive that was damaged. Ludovic also played in a band as a guitarist. He kept playing video games like League of Legends or Diablo 4.

Ludovic was surprised to get e-mails from Switzerland and Belgium from fans of his song there, so it's a good clue it got some notoriety in the rest of the Francophonie^[1].

The song gave a bad reputation to the Ligue québécoise de jeux en réseau (LQJR) because the song mentioned smoking pot, which was illegal at the time. As a result, parents were worried to let their children attend their tournaments.

The song was so popular that when a police officer arrested one of admins of the LQJR for missing a STOP sign, he sang the song upon seeing his t-shirt of the LQJR.
