On March 26th, 2026, Mitch Leeuwe posted a post on Twitter / X[1] @MitchLeeuwe encouraging people to stop drawing flat style and start to learn construction and basic animal anatomy instead. The post received more than 2,100 reposts and 19,000 likes in one week.
Spread
In late March 2026, the post became a subject of criticism and discourse with users defending flat styles as intentional choices, citing examples from popular media. This post has also spawned artists and editors to draw existing simple-shaped characters in the style of the right. For example on March 30th, 2026, Twitter / X[2] user @pk_kenzie uploaded drawing of original and Mitch's version of Chowder from Chowder. The post received more than 13,000 reposts and 201,000 likes in three days.
On March 31st, 2026, Twitter / X[3] user @ShinigamiYX uploaded similar drawing by using character Doraemon from Doraemon. The post received more than 28,000 reposts and 272,000 likes in two days.
